Trancing like Beavis & Butthead

I’m 50/50 about the video myself. First off it reminds me of the trippy desert scene in Beavis & Butthead do America, then both the Ray Ban and Haviana flip-flop ads mixed with M.I.A.’s “Boyz” come to mind. The scene that throws me off most is the black and white one with the zebra at 2:25. In a way it reminds me of the lovely Kesh‘s t-shirts. Actually, if you know of Kesh then you might agree with me that her entire style is reflected in the video.

The thing that throws me off is well.. Russian Roulette is the album this single is coming off of and the theme of it is supposed to be dark. I blame Def Jam for their executive decision on the carrying forth of the music video. My mind is telling me they changed to something more lighthearted, bright and fun because Rihanna’s dark emo-ish vibe was not selling records.

Props still go out to Melina Matsoukas for directing and Rob Zangardi for styling an amazing music video.

Life kind of got in the way of this website. As you can see haven’t exactly been active on this site for a good month or so. Last blog was November when I got dumped with crazy amounts of homework for school. Then winter break came and I went back home to Boston from London. Not being home for several months was hard so I was trying my best to treasure the time I had there. This site might be down soon seeing as I now own Oh-Word.com and am switching hosting for this site under that one. I mean Oh-Word.com is going to be a hosting site anyways and I don’t see the point in hosting CheckTheMentality under a different server. Hmm.. I thing I have found the definite direction for this blog. Might possibly be getting a separate domain for my portfolio as well.

Bare with me while all of these changes are going on throughout the site. If you have any questions feel free to contact me via email. Whether it is for this site or questions about hosting under the new domain. And YES subdomains will be free, I will just implement regulations to ensure that you are fully capable and willing to manage your subdomain on your own. It will not be necessary to have knowledge of graphic design seeing as how there are great programs like WordPress and B2evolution where templates may be used. So please if you want to be hosted as soon as possible on Oh-Word.com do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you very much.

01/14/2010 UPDATE! UPDATE! UPDATE!
I have realized my online portfolio has become massive and there is still more to add with all of the new work I have done so far in the past year or so that I still have yet to put up. Because of its massive size and the fact that its stretched over so many categories (Painting, Illustration, Graphic Design) I will be moving my portfolio to a new website all together, keeping it separate from CheckTheMentality.com. Also, note that because I am/have submitted the URL of my portfolio for college transfers that the portfolio will be getting my utmost attention from anywhere between two weeks and a month before I turn back to maintaining this website. Reason for this being I have already submitted a portfolio URL some places and need to work quickly.  The listing for my network of websites will be:

CheckTheMentality.com – personal website & blog
Oh-Word.com – free subdomains and low cost hosting
Lastly, my portfolio. Have not decided on a name but will soon!

01/19/2010 FINAL UPDATEEEE!!!
THIS site has been working on and off all day yesterday and today. I am just transferring hosting seeing as my domain name expired and everything might get deleted inbetween. Sorry for the inconvenience! Especially if you are here to use resources and anything like that.

P.S. My portfolio site is going to be MissJanssen.com! Joining my network of sites including this one and Oh-Word.com. :)

Inspiration hits you dead in the FACE like pigeon poo

Dorm LivingNot everyone gets pooped on by pigeons every day. I am one of the few who has not gone through the traumatic experience, only one to witness it.. several times. Afterwards I feel like how C felt in A Bronx Tale when he realized Sonny saved his life from taking him out of the car with his friends. Totally different scenario, but I feel lucky. Had I moved over a couple inches, I would have been the target.

Off topic. Okay. Inspiration hits as randomly as the situation portrayed in the title of this post. Some find it with every step they take, others must search under rocks. It is different for everyone. Honestly, I feel like it has nothing to do whether or not you are artistically minded. It might help. If you just look hard enough around you and learn to appreciate everything for what it is you will find it.

Now for the reason behind this inspiration topic, emails. I have recieved several throughout the past months and loads in the past three weeks asking me how I get ideas. The equation is (percieve + analyze)/(appreciation) = inspiration. Haha. Truthfully it is. If you can do the first two and appreciate everything for its unique state then you will be fine. It is a skill that you must perfect but worth it.

With that I leave you with places that I find inspiration in online. Blogs, forums, magazines, etc. Hope this helps the people that have asked. In no way am I directly affiliated with any of these websites.
